Today, one simply has to mention the iPhone for the rumour mills to get going and it seems that there is as much speculation regarding when the iPhone 5 will be launched as there is about what the phone will look like and how it will perform.

The reason there is so much speculation regarding the iPhone 5 is that this is the market offering that promises to outsmart the other family of smartphones, driven by Android. Recent Android powered smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S II, have overtaken the iPhone in many ways, particularly in terms of processor power.

When the iPhone 4 was launched with a processer clock rate of 800 MHz it was thought to be very impressive, but the latest Android phones now have dual core processors which are clocked at an amazing 1.2 GHz; one and a half times as fast as the iPhone. This has a huge impact on user experience; the higher speed means that the graphics run more smoothly and multitasking does not cause the OS to grind to a halt.

There is little doubt that this will be redressed by Apple, but the question remains as to when. Now analysts are suggesting that the iPhone 5 may be launched as soon as September 2011, though there sources, particularly Chinese suppliers of components to Apple, say that the phone will not go into manufacture until 2012.

When the iPhone does appear it is likely to feature iOS 5 and the processor is likely to be the Samsung A5 dual-core processor which has a nominal clock rate of 1 GHz.

Interestingly the clock rate is adjustable in that it can be reduced when required in order to reduce the power consumption and thus increase battery life. The new processor, which is built as a system on a chip, has a much more advanced graphics processing module than the one that powers the iPhone 4 and the hope is that this will compensate for the processors lack of raw speed compared to the latest Android phones.
